The idea for the Larval Biology Symposium was conceived nearly twenty years ago, when Steven Morgan and Craig Young decided to organize a conference that focused on the biology and ecology of marine larvae. Steven agreed to host the first conference if Craig agreed to host the second conference. After calling larval biologists around the world to determine the best time to hold such a conference, the first International Larval Biology Symposium was held in Port Jefferson, New York in 1993, co-hosted by Steven Morgan and Bob Cowen.
Since then, the biannual conference has become a truly international symposium with participants from dozens of countries each year. This year, Berkeley joins Ft. Pierce, Florida; Melbourne, Australia; Santa Cruz, California; Vigo, Spain; Hong Kong, China; Coos Bay, Oregon; Lisboa, Portugal; and Wellington, New Zealand in the list of cities that have hosted the symposium.
If you are interested in hosting the next symposium in 2014, please email Seth at shmiller@ucdavis.edu for more information.
